Dublin City University hosted an international Chess tournament under the auspices of the Irish Chess Union (ICU) over three days last week. The tournament, a junior event, saw teams from Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales compete for a number of prestigious trophies.

Deputising for the Lord Mayor at the presentation of the prizes, Cllr. Larry O'Toole commended the Irish Chess Union for organising the event. There were sixty participants from Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland.

Cllr. O'Toole said, "I would like to commend the Irish Chess Union for successfully hosting the event. Bringing together sixty young people and their families to compete in international competition."

Cllr. O'Toole added, "However it is regrettable that The Sports Council does not recognize chess as a sport for the purpose of funding, even though chess is already officially recognised as a sport in most of the 160 countries affiliated to the International Chess Federation. Having spoken at length to ICU officers, I'm hoping to work with them to promote the benefits of chess for young people in my own and other parts of Dublin."
